Seven Favorite Sufjan Songs

Seven is my favorite number for lists. Five is limiting and ten is just extravagant.
What if I said that Sufjan Stevens is slowly becoming my favorite artist? His music has that thing that the X-Files and Life have, that thing that makes them my favorite. It has that thing that The Deathly Hallows and Brideshead Revisited have that make them my favorite.

The Owl and the Tanager from All Delighted People.
Counting alluvial plains/The breathing inside of the range/You touched me inside of my cage Beneath my shirt your hands embraced me/Come to me feathered and frayed/For I am the ugliest prey/For I am the ugliest prey/The owl, the reckless reckless praise.

The Predatory Wasp from Illinoise.
I can tell you, the telling gets old/Terrible sting and terrible storm/I can tell you the day we were born/My friend is gone, he ran away/I can tell you, I love him each day/Though we have sparred, wrestled and raged/I can tell you, I love him each day/Terrible sting and terrible storm/I can tell you.

Casimir Pulaski Day from Illinoise.
All the glory that the Lord has made/And the complications you could do without/When I kissed you on the mouth/Tuesday night at the Bible study/We lift our hands and pray over your body but nothing ever happens/I remember at Michael's house/In the living room when you kissed my neck/And I almost touched your blouse.

Romulus from Greetings from Michigan.
When she had her last child, Once when she had some boyfriends, some wild/She moved away quite far/Our grandpa bought us a new VCR/We watched it all night, but grew up in spite of it/ We watched it all night, but grew up in spite of it/We saw her once last fall/Our grandpa died in a hospital gown/She didn't seem to care/She smoked in her room and colored her hair.

A Good Man is Hard to Find from Seven Swans.
Hold to your gun, man/And put off all your peace/Put off all the beast/Paid a full of these, I wait for it/But someone's once like me/She was once like me.

That Was the Worst Christmas Ever! from Songs for Christmas.
Our father yells/Throwing gifts in the wood stove, wood stove/My sister runs away/Taking her books to the schoolyard, schoolyard/In time the snow will rise/In time the Lord will rise/Silent night/Holy night/Silent night/Nothing feels right.
(Related comment: This is the MULDER song to me.)

Djohariah from All Delighted People.
And the man who left you for dead/He’s the heart grabber back stabber double cheater wife beater/You don’t need that man in your life/And you worked yourself to the bone/While the people say what they say/It’s the neighbors anyway/They don’t know what’s good for your life/Don’t be ashamed- don’t hide in your room/For the woman is, woman is the glorious victorious/The mother of the heart of the world.

It's been a beautiful day for no apparent reason. I cleaned up dinner... I watched X-Files... I had a Little Debbie snack cake...

Tumblrs To Follow

Because everyone needs MOAR Tumblr in their life.

lilyifmylifeismine. Strange, unconventional art, textures. The occasional food or fandom image, but she keeps her Tumblr terribly original.

The Quiet World. X-Files, LOST, lots of pretty ladies, lots of pretty dudes. Also she's a Christian so she often has pretty graphics with Bible verses.

If there's iced tea in the bag, it could be love. The Mulder and Scully tumblr. It's not updated daily, but they aren't repetitive and it's always exciting when they update. Beside, d'aww.

Patterpaw. Lots of Harry Potter. And lots of general beautiful images, but not cheesy ones.

Unrealityart. Where this girl finds the art she posts here is a mystery. But she has a constant flow of beautiful, mysterious, colorful art. All sorts, all styles.

PlanetoftheVistas. She is a Doctor Who maniac, and also a VPM fan. And general pretty stuff always pops up here and there between the Rory Williams spams.

Plenilune. Beautiful Edwardian photographs and fashion, costume dramas, X-Files, LotR, Doctor Who, cupcakes, vintage illistrations. Lots of Cats-are-better-than-dogs... Basically all around good taste.

penultimateclinch. A fan of Farscape and the X-Files. But mostly, she's boss at funny graphics. And I love funny graphics.

Turn of the Century. Art, photographs, posters, fashion, advertisements, pin-ups, everything from about 1880-1920.

Purple Boots. Most varied Tumblr I follow. Literally a little big of everything.

Observations on Season 8: It does not suck so far, despite popular opinion. Scully is killing me with her sorrow. She hasn't smiled since Mulder was abducted. She hadn't anything since Mulder was abducted; she's wandering around like a ghost. I miss Mulder terribly, but not having him around is making me appreciate him and his opinions more. When Scully and Doggett are baffled I'm like, MULDER WOULD HAVE KNOWN! As for Doggett, I love him. He is sweet and calm and such a Hufflepuff.

SHE GAVE A MAN U GUISE. What did you give? So today we have a house warming/birthday party which I'm sure will be yummy. No Doctor Who tonight. Sadness.

Enviromentalism, MY WAY.

I do not condone the 21st century consumerist upper-middle-class urban style of environmentalist. Instead of buying a new $80 organic cotton blouse, shop secondhand. And what do you think your individually packaged Whole Foods wild grown almond sampler is doing for the the world other than fill up landfills? So I try to conserve, as long as I can afford it and it doesn't take up too much time. We normal people have lives to live, so listen up park slope yuppies. Try actually CONSERVING for once, instead of just consuming.

Stainless steal bottles. My sister's carried this around with her for almost a year now. The amount of plastic (and money) she's saved is amazing. I bought one too recently, it's really an impactful habit.

One big thing our family does is go without AC in the summer. We only use it at night. Now this is more for saving money so we can eat out more (we really like eating out) but it still conserves lots of energy.

We use reusable bags or course. My Dad's done this for years now. (This spiffy one with gorgeous aliens on it is MINE.)

Most of the time at a fast food restaurant, I leave the lid and straw off the cup. You're just gonna throw it out anyway.

Recycle. I know this sounds simple, but I know so many people who don't.

If I'm are out and have to buy a drink, I try to buy it in a glass bottle (renewable), and then bring it home to recycle instead of tossing it in a NYC Park Department garbage can, where I doubt anything gets recycled.

I don't use plastic cups, nor does Katie. I used to use a glass Coke cup, but that broke, so I've been using an electric green plastic margarita cup I got as a party favor, because why waste it and buy a new one?

Don't buy anything individually wrapped just for convenience sake. Use plastic baggies, and then reuse those.

On that same train of thought, I try and bring fruit for snacks, which I can just toss in my bag, instead of something that needs packaging in the first place.

Drawing and writing and formatting and editing. Running your own magazine (albeit a sporadic one) is too much work. More ~X-Files~ tonight. Also, I have decided that when we're done with the Files, I'm gonna watch all the Doctor Who episodes with Five.

The perk of being a New Yorker willing to lose sleep

So obviously in the summer I have too much fun and forget to post. But worry not, I am too exhausted to ever do anything fun ever again. Or at least till Saturday. But for The Winter's Tale? It was worth it being exhausted and sleeping for three hours for two consecutive nights. Shakespeare at the Delacourt is always worth it.

As You Like It. 2005. My first Delacourt experience. To tell the truth, I can't remember it terribly well, but I love the play and I definitely remember loving it. The sets and costumes were magnificent, that much I can remember. And Rosalind was very likable- something hard for Shakespeare's heroines to be.

MacBeth. 2006. There are Hamlet people and there are MacBeth people. I am a MacBeth person. But this was probably the most disappointing of my Shakespeare experiences. It was lovely, and the acting was great, but what I love about MacBeth is the maniacal hysteria of it all, and this was probably the calmest MacBeth I've ever seen.

Midsummer's Night Dream. 2007. This one was excellent. It was a half-way musical, and complete magic, and they actually made Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius LIKEABLE! It was crazy, I was all happy for them. But the best part was Bottom's play at the end. The audience was laughing like like it was a pop comedy.

Hamlet. 2008. There are Hamlet people and there are MacBeth people. I'm a MacBeth person. But, I loved this one show obviously. Polonius was really great. But the best part was that for the play within the play, there was a giant puppet show, with these eight feet tall floaty puppets. It was so magical.

Twelfth Night. 2009. One of my favorite of his comedies. This one, honestly, was probably the most magical and encompassing of all the Public Theater productions I've seen. All the characters were charismatic, the acting, the sets were lovely, and it was a certified musical. I listen to the soundtrack regularly.

The Winter's Tale. 2010. My favorite Shakespeare play. Ever. It it an odd play though, one moment you are on the verge of tears, the next you're laughing. But it was beautifully put together, and the ending game me chills. Hermione is so
awesome, being a statue and stuff. Staging-wise, it was my favorite, all the random ghosts of Hermione and Mamillius... It being the most recent one I saw, I could say about seventeen more things, but I'll stop with, I loved it.

"HERMIONE IS CHASTE. POLIXENES BLAMELESS."
Oh, Winter's Tale, you slay me. Anyway, today work went surprisingly well despite my sleepiness. I did hit my head really hard in the walk-in freezer though. But Silvestro gave me a St. Anthony bread to take home and it was all good. X-FILES TONIGHT YAH BABY.

Graphs are funnnny

My new favorite internet fad are those pie graphs. I could read those alll day.

"My boys... my poncho wearing boys. If we're going to die, let's die looking like a Peruvian folk band."
Oh Amy, what is the matter with you? We're going to the Roosevelt Field Mall after church, waahoo!
