The other heroes

William B Davis once said this about his character, "I decided I was the hero, Mulder was the bad guy. Of course as the CSM I was ruthless and unfeeling, but to do what I believed had to be done, how else could I be?." Villains with a worthy cause are always, without fail, the best.

Scorpius and Sikozu.
Scorp needs the wormhole knowledge from John to save the Peacekeepers from the Scarrans. He needs it. If John had cooperated from the beginning, Scorp wouldn't have bothered with Harvy, but he will do whatever he needs to get that information. Sikozu believes in Scorp's cause, but her people come first, and she will do what she had to to protect her race, even if it means betraying her friends.

CGB, Krycek and Marita
CGB is trying to save the world, for himself. It's a good cause, self preservation. Krycek and Marita can only follow him (and each other) to a point, but they were looking towards saving themselves too. When you look at the show flipped over, it's easy to think that maybe CGB was right and Mulder is meddling with things he doesn't understand. Maybe Scully and Mulder should have left well enough alone. (Diana and Spender also fit in here... (But not
Knowle Rohrer. Ever.))

Lucius and Narcissa
In Deathly Hallows, their story is very interesting. During Voldemort's first reign of terror, it's clear that the Malfoy's thought that the blood lines should stay pure, but they never seemed to really be as into Voldy. In the end they are trying to help Harry- even though they disapprove of Mudbloods, they understand that Voldemort can not win... cause he's psycho, not political.

Ben and Widmore
One thing I was never fond of on LOST was the way they handled their villains. I get that they were going for the characters being their own villains, but there were not enough complicated love-hate bad guys. That being said, Ben and Widmore were pretty cool. The trouble was that we liked Ben and did not like Widmore, even though they were two sides of the same coin. They both wanted the island, they both wanted to save the world, they both wanted to protect their daughter. I think the idea that Widmore wanted Pen to stay away from Desmond, not because he didn't like him, but because he somehow knew Des would end up on the island, was one of the largest lost opportunities in the last season.

75% of Doctor Who villains.
Preservation of your race, of you and your own. You see it again and again in Doctor Who. In the most recent season alone the aliens in The Lodger, the Saturnynian and the Silurians are all heroes in a way. They are looking out for themselves... and Earth is in the way.

Norrington and Beckett
One thing I like about the Pirates movies is that Norrington is never set up as the villain, he has a job he has to do. Beckett, on the other hand, I've always felt sorry for. His cause is noble, it's for the good of society. Even though we like these particular pirates, when I look at the big picture, I think I'd side with Beckett.

Lex, Tess and Zod
They are all heroes in their own right. Lex and his father are honestly worried about the future of earth with Clark, and rightly so. Sadly, trying to pull a man down from having too much power by making yourself too powerful... doesn't really work. Tess just wanted to save the world and she got caught up in Checkmate, Lex, the Kandorians, the Justice League, all these conflicting loyalties, all these conflicting organizations all with the same goal. Saving the world... from each other. She spread herself to thin and lost their trust. Zod really does want whats best... for his people. What is best for his people... is not best for our people.

In Dunkin Donuts I found a sexy Jeffery Spender look-alike. I stalked him.

Daughters are not possible.

Most of my favorite fictional couples have a son. Not just a son among their other kids or something, but exclusively one kid, a boy. Why no girls? Rude.

John Crichton and Aeryn Sun of Farscape and their son Deke. Deke is like a sign of peace in the galaxy. He has pretty famous parents who helped secure peace between the Scarrans and the Peacekeepers. His existence in and of itself is hope for the future of earth. When he was still in utero he was just one big SYMBOL for the John/Aeryn relationship and the relationship between humans and Peacekeepers. But in the comic he is definitely a little person.

Howl Pendragon and Sophie Hatter of The Moving Castle series and their son Morgan. So Morgan must be the coolest baby ever. First of all he was born as a cat while his mom was also a cat and his father was a genie and they were all traveling with Abdullah. He was born as a cat. Morgan is ridiculously spoiled and terribly loved and a really funny little toddler.

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully of The X-Files and their son William. So William is totally going to save the world in a few years. That much is clear. According to that UFO cult he will finish what his father started and defeat the aliens. The poor thing doesn't even get to be raised by his parents, two of the coolest people in the world, but that fits the Chosen One motif so it's all good.

Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Malfoy of Harry Potter and their son Draco. In an odd way they are by far the most normal family you will see on this list. There is not much to say about the Malfoy clan that has not been said before but I will say this. Draco must have been one pampered little child. Living in that manor with his parents and those peacocks for the first eleven years of his life...

Michael Cadogen and Caddy Casson of The Casson series and their son Carlos. Poor Buttercup, I doubt he will ever entirely shake that nick-name. He is the product of an entire book series of missteps and confusion between his parents. He is the best way to end a book ever. Authors around the world take note. You will never live up to the Buttercup Carlos Michael Cadogen Blues.
(Since these books don't have fan art I have used a picture of a sea lion. Carlos was named after a sea lion so it is appropriate.)

Desmond Hume and Penelope Widmore of LOST and their son Charlie. I love that family and all their potential. Although I was relatively fond of the end of LOST part of me wishes it could have just been the Hume Family Show forever. I think the creators of LOST got in over their heads with Des and Pen, they were just too amazing. They felt trapped in the background of the show. He's a lucky kid. His parents are amazing and he lives on a boat.

Remus Lupin and Dora Tonks of Harry Potter and their son Teddy. Of course Teddy doesn't get raised by his parents but they still had him for a while. I really like what JK did with Teddy, he is a sign of the new and better wizarding world. Of course he'll be an amazing person because look at his parents!

Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann of Pirates of the Carribean and their son William. The biggest plot hole of the last movie was Elizabeth. She could have just impaled herself with a sword and said no to death and joined Will's crew for all eternity. But then she wouldn't have had a son I guess, and then that would have messed with the pattern of my OTPs having sons so it's all good in the end.

So, Rory and Amy? You have a mission to fullfill.

Martha Jones Syndrome

Fandom can be fickle and whiny and all around annoying. But their largest crime is their unwillingness to accept new characters simply because they feel threatened by them. I call this Martha Jones Syndrome simply because the Doctor Who fandom was the first place I encountered it, but I am sure she was not the first to suffer at the hand of bitter little romantics.

Martha Jones of Doctor Who. Crimes committed against fandom: Not being Rose Tyler, having a crush on the Doctor, being smarter than Rose Tyler, not respecting the memory of Rose Tyler, threatening Rose/Ten as a ship. I understand that fans were mad at Billie for leaving but that is hardly Martha or Freema's fault. Davis didn't pretend Rose had never existed and Martha filled a completely different role in the Doctor's life. Haters just fail to see the big picture.

Ilana Verdansky of LOST. Crimes committed against fandom: Being yet another out-of-the-blue character, taking up last season time, being too much like Ana Lucia (?). This one just baffles me. Ilana is NOTHING like Ana Lucia... I mean, she's brunette? She likes carrying guns? So is Kate if you haven't noticed. I'll agree that her character was unnecessary but lets blame Darlton and not laugh when her head gets blown off, kay?

Monica Reyes of The X-Files. Crimes committed against fandom: Not being Mulder, shaking up the structure of the X-Files, having a romance outside of Mulder/Scully, being happy. There are quite a few people who dislike Doggett but the amount of hate for Monica is outlandish. You think fans would be happy for another open minded character because Scully and Doggett didn't get much done. You'd think fans would be happy she is a straight female who has no designs on Scully (or Mulder). Obviously that is not enough.

Jane Seever of Life. Crimes committed against fandom: Coming out of nowhere and being awesome. I would have thought that the Life fandom was mature enough to respect a new character who came to save the day while Sarah Shahi was on maternity leave. I mean, what are you gonna do? But Seever was given the same bitter resistance. This is just a massive mystery to me.

Now Allison Mack is pulling a Duchovny and leaving Smallville. I think that fans need to be happy that actors put up with being tied to tv shows for so long and be grateful for what they get. BUT THAT'S JUST ME. TRYIN' TO BE NICE. Whatever.

Death? What is that?

I am posting twice in a day because I am just sitting here. Bored. To. Death. Speaking of death... "Death can not stop True Love. All it can do is delay it for a while." This is basically the motto for all my favorites. It's called FANTASY people, roll with it.

Rory and Amy, Doctor Who.
Rory dies? Jk, it's a dream. Rory dies again and gets erased from time? Don't worry, we've got a Nestene Duplicate! Rory shoots Amy? Throw her in the Pandorica for 2,000 years- she'll be fine. They both get eaten up when the universe collapses? The Doctor exploded into the Tardis and brought them all back. Rory and Amy are alive, human, unscathed and married.

Snow White and The Prince, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Original example is relevant and original. Everyone else is just ripping them off.

Mulder and Scully, The X-Files.
Mulder is abducted and returned dead and buried and three months later they exhume him and BLAH BLAH ALIEN VIRUSES HE'S FINE! Scully rejoiced, they're reunited, that's the end of that. Three months. In a grave. Pshaw. True Love is a stronger force.

Hermione and Leontes, The Winter's Tale.
Okay, so if this isn't the most feel-good example ever I don't know what is. Reading this play or watching it, by the last scene I've got such a ridiculous grin on my face it's embarrassing.

John and Aeryn, Farscape.
So John died from radiation poisoning, saving the whole freaking universe? There is the other John, waiting patiently for her return. This one had a few more repercussions then other examples, but still. We get an epic death scene AND a happy ending, and who can argue with that?

Will and Elizabeth, PotC.
The way to saving a dying person is making him immortal. Duh.

Charlie and Claire, LOST.
So really, everyone on LOST gets rewarded with their true love despite death, and although I have qualms with many of the choices made (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) I think that Charlie and Claire was the sweetest example.

Ned and Chuck, Pushing Daisies.
Death couldn't stop them! Never. Of course now they can never touch each other... but... at least they have each other, right? RIGHT?

Buttercup and Westley, The Princess Bride.
Didn't think I'd leave this off, did ya? Their book coined the above phrase after all.

I am emotionally exhausted today. Edith Wharton's "WHY!!" endings plus Mulder's depressing return plus amazing banana cake plus running amok with Bon Iver and Tegan and Sara on Dailymotion... It's a dangerous combination.

Wear your fandom, proud!

Yesterday's post was so much fun I searched Etsy for more fandom necklaces!

Let everyone know the answer to the universe with this necklace. Also let them know that you are a Douglas Adams fanatic.

You can't travel with the Doctor? Let the Doctor travel with you!

If you wear this it's probably because you want to believe that people around you will get the X-Files reference.

An obscure reference to LOST, but one that a true fan will instantly pick up on. It's all about bunnies.

Pirates fan? Pretty obvious if you wear this around your neck.

Kryptonite is a dangerous substance, but wearing it around your neck may keep you safe from the meteor freaks.

Blue Sun dog-tags are a subtle but fun reference to Firefly.

Long day. No sleep. Much coffee. Doggett is a darling. Sometimes I do not understand fans, we are so needy all the time!

Penelope Widmore Hume

Do you remember when I said that I wouldn't be doing a LOST post for a while? Um. I lied.

We, the viewers of LOST as a united whole, can agree on one character. Penny.

Faithful, constant, dependable Penny who keeps Desmond on the straight and narrow, who saved our Losties countless times, and who, we need to remember, stole out hearts in only 13 out of the 121 episodes of LOST.

Heck, she stole our hearts in her first few seconds on screen. Between her finding Desmond at the stadium in Live Together, Die Alone, to her first substantial appearance in Flashes Before Your Eyes, we had become emotionally invested in a character, and a couple, we knew nothing about essentially.

We just had faith that they were as wonderful as we assumed. Obviously, they were.

Despite the fact that we only ever saw Penny in the context of Desmond and her father, she was never a character at the expense of Desmond.

She was a real person, with a distinct character. Maybe Sonya Walger is just an amazing actress, or maybe the Lost writers saved all their best lines for her, but there is no doubt about it. Everyone loves and respects Penelope.

She and Des were the stars of what is universally know at the best kiss on LOST.

As well as the stars of what is universally known as the best freaking scene in all of LOST.

Plus she is one badass dead lady, with one sexy dead husband. JUST SAYING.

Sorry, but I just love her so much. School today, double up on German. The gym later hopefully. Or tomorrow. I'm lazy. X-Files tonight, or Mean Girls, not sure what we're getting from Netflix. Either way. It's been an indecisive morning.

Do you believe in life after LOST?

This will be my last LOST post for a very long time. I want to be able to fully respect the show by backing off for a while and mulling over. The more I think about it, the more I love the way it ended. And the more I think about it and the more I love it, the more I catch myself thinking, "Woah! So much potential! I can't wait for next season!" Oh wait. Right. So although fanfic will abound and my heart is at ease, I wonder, will life ever be the same? So here are some other awesome forms of entertainment I plan on filling the hole in my heart with.

For an alternate universe fix, which I'll be needing soon enough, I've got Gone and Back on hold from the library. John gets to meet his statue wife and daughter in a universe where Zhann is alive...

Listen the the Up soundtrack. Because Michael Giacchino is a god.

I already need a Terry O'Quinn fix, so thankfully we were already planning on watching Fight the Future this evening. He has a small part, but it's what made me watch Fight the Future for the first time all those years ago. He doesn't age though, and it's creepy.

Reunited lovers was one of the biggest "things" on LOST. Sun and Jin and Des and Penny... so in the face of having no epic war-torn romantic angst to look forward to each week, I guess I'm just gonna have to reread The Beckoning Road. It's been a good eight months since I last picked it up.

Throw myself into Fringe wholeheartedly. I think I have already done this, but perhaps I can be even more obsessed. JJ Abrams is JJ Abrams, whether on an magical island of mystery or in um, Boston.

The trope of a select few and their loved ones going to a happy place in the sky is hardly a new one. The West, Summer Country and Narnia will definitely fill my need for theologically unsound after-lives.

Reread the Odyssey. When all was said and done, this show still reminded me overwhelmingly of a Greek epic. Plus the Odysseus and Penelope motif. Le sigh.

Suliet and Jate still feel like a bad dream, but I can sleep easy knowing LOST is truly over. I will miss this show like the burning. In other news I had 3 hours of sleep and was up at 5am but I had a really good morning at work. I do not understand my body. Also, new favorite song!!
