The other heroes

William B Davis once said this about his character, "I decided I was the hero, Mulder was the bad guy. Of course as the CSM I was ruthless and unfeeling, but to do what I believed had to be done, how else could I be?." Villains with a worthy cause are always, without fail, the best.


Scorpius and Sikozu.
Scorp needs the wormhole knowledge from John to save the Peacekeepers from the Scarrans. He needs it. If John had cooperated from the beginning, Scorp wouldn't have bothered with Harvy, but he will do whatever he needs to get that information. Sikozu believes in Scorp's cause, but her people come first, and she will do what she had to to protect her race, even if it means betraying her friends.


CGB, Krycek and Marita
CGB is trying to save the world, for himself. It's a good cause, self preservation. Krycek and Marita can only follow him (and each other) to a point, but they were looking towards saving themselves too. When you look at the show flipped over, it's easy to think that maybe CGB was right and Mulder is meddling with things he doesn't understand. Maybe Scully and Mulder should have left well enough alone. (Diana and Spender also fit in here... (But not Knowle Rohrer. Ever.))


Lucius and Narcissa
In Deathly Hallows, their story is very interesting. During Voldemort's first reign of terror, it's clear that the Malfoy's thought that the blood lines should stay pure, but they never seemed to really be as into Voldy. In the end they are trying to help Harry- even though they disapprove of Mudbloods, they understand that Voldemort can not win... cause he's psycho, not political.


Ben and Widmore
One thing I was never fond of on LOST was the way they handled their villains. I get that they were going for the characters being their own villains, but there were not enough complicated love-hate bad guys. That being said, Ben and Widmore were pretty cool. The trouble was that we liked Ben and did not like Widmore, even though they were two sides of the same coin. They both wanted the island, they both wanted to save the world, they both wanted to protect their daughter. I think the idea that Widmore wanted Pen to stay away from Desmond, not because he didn't like him, but because he somehow knew Des would end up on the island, was one of the largest lost opportunities in the last season.

Preservation of your race, of you and your own. You see it again and again in Doctor Who. In the most recent season alone the aliens in The Lodger, the Saturnynian and the Silurians are all heroes in a way. They are looking out for themselves... and Earth is in the way.


Norrington and Beckett
One thing I like about the Pirates movies is that Norrington is never set up as the villain, he has a job he has to do. Beckett, on the other hand, I've always felt sorry for. His cause is noble, it's for the good of society. Even though we like these particular pirates, when I look at the big picture, I think I'd side with Beckett.


Lex, Tess and Zod
They are all heroes in their own right. Lex and his father are honestly worried about the future of earth with Clark, and rightly so. Sadly, trying to pull a man down from having too much power by making yourself too powerful... doesn't really work. Tess just wanted to save the world and she got caught up in Checkmate, Lex, the Kandorians, the Justice League, all these conflicting loyalties, all these conflicting organizations all with the same goal. Saving the world... from each other. She spread herself to thin and lost their trust. Zod really does want whats best... for his people. What is best for his people... is not best for our people.

Ode to the decade I failed to pay attention to.

It's okay. I was young. I only enjoyed the Magic School Bus/Reading Rainbow part of the 90's. But the father away we get from them and the more I examine them, the more sure I am that their aesthetic was the best aesthetic everrrrr.


Scott Pilgrim, Plumtree, 1997. So girl bands in the 90's were just supior to girl bands now. Actually, there aren't even girl bands anymore.


Harry Potter, 1998-2007. I was so late to the Harry Potter party it's pathetic.


Business-Lady Suits. Like Moonlighting suits, the ones that everyone but me think are ugly.


Speed, 1994. Reasons why I love this film: 1. The 90's fashion. 2. Exploding trains. 3. Keanu's Hot Bod. 4. Keanu and Sandra being adorable. 5. Keanu and Sandra making out. 6. Defusing bombs is a mythical hobby of mine.


The Cranberries, 1993. My favorite 90's music ever, they are just so romantic.


The X-Files, 1993-2002. Television has never been the same, The X-Files influenced basically everything.


Lovely Grunge. I long for a time when this was appropriate going-out clothes.


The Chicken Doesn't Skate, 1996. Probably the best book for 8-12 ever written. (And by best I mean funnest.)

Victorian Goth. My sister wants to reinvent herself as a Victorian Goth but the current fashion industry is not complying with her dreams.


Sixpence None the Richer, 1992-2004. The best, Christian rock band ever. I dare you to find better. Their biggest hit Kiss Me was released summer 1998.

I have so many books out from the library, I can not possible read them all in time. *stresses out* Why do they insist on all coming at the same time?

Most of my favorite fictional couples have a son. Not just a son among their other kids or something, but exclusively one kid, a boy. Why no girls? Rude.


John Crichton and Aeryn Sun of Farscape and their son Deke. Deke is like a sign of peace in the galaxy. He has pretty famous parents who helped secure peace between the Scarrans and the Peacekeepers. His existence in and of itself is hope for the future of earth. When he was still in utero he was just one big SYMBOL for the John/Aeryn relationship and the relationship between humans and Peacekeepers. But in the comic he is definitely a little person.


Howl Pendragon and Sophie Hatter of The Moving Castle series and their son Morgan. So Morgan must be the coolest baby ever. First of all he was born as a cat while his mom was also a cat and his father was a genie and they were all traveling with Abdullah. He was born as a cat. Morgan is ridiculously spoiled and terribly loved and a really funny little toddler.


Fox Mulder and Dana Scully of The X-Files and their son William. So William is totally going to save the world in a few years. That much is clear. According to that UFO cult he will finish what his father started and defeat the aliens. The poor thing doesn't even get to be raised by his parents, two of the coolest people in the world, but that fits the Chosen One motif so it's all good.


Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Malfoy of Harry Potter and their son Draco. In an odd way they are by far the most normal family you will see on this list. There is not much to say about the Malfoy clan that has not been said before but I will say this. Draco must have been one pampered little child. Living in that manor with his parents and those peacocks for the first eleven years of his life...


Michael Cadogen and Caddy Casson of The Casson series and their son Carlos. Poor Buttercup, I doubt he will ever entirely shake that nick-name. He is the product of an entire book series of missteps and confusion between his parents. He is the best way to end a book ever. Authors around the world take note. You will never live up to the Buttercup Carlos Michael Cadogen Blues.
(Since these books don't have fan art I have used a picture of a sea lion. Carlos was named after a sea lion so it is appropriate.)


Desmond Hume and Penelope Widmore of LOST and their son Charlie. I love that family and all their potential. Although I was relatively fond of the end of LOST part of me wishes it could have just been the Hume Family Show forever. I think the creators of LOST got in over their heads with Des and Pen, they were just too amazing. They felt trapped in the background of the show. He's a lucky kid. His parents are amazing and he lives on a boat.


Remus Lupin and Dora Tonks of Harry Potter and their son Teddy. Of course Teddy doesn't get raised by his parents but they still had him for a while. I really like what JK did with Teddy, he is a sign of the new and better wizarding world. Of course he'll be an amazing person because look at his parents!


Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann of Pirates of the Carribean and their son William. The biggest plot hole of the last movie was Elizabeth. She could have just impaled herself with a sword and said no to death and joined Will's crew for all eternity. But then she wouldn't have had a son I guess, and then that would have messed with the pattern of my OTPs having sons so it's all good in the end.

So, Rory and Amy? You have a mission to fullfill.

Yeah. I like the movies well enough. I own a Wizard Rock album, went to a Wizard Rock concert. I read fanfiction regularly, I've watched AVPM and AVPS. I know all the fanarists. Makani, ReallyCorking, HillaryCW, Burdgebug, ArtDungeon… I've drawn it too. Badly

Church this morning, and then a yummy Mexican dinner. And then The X-Files. We have ten left. TEN TEN TEN. I will cry when this is over, I really think I might.

Lately I have been very whiny. So I think that I should make a list of things I am thankful for. Some of these are VERY SERIOUS and some are just things that I honestly am thankful for no matter how dumb.


I am thankful for my angelic ball of sunshine and shenanigans, Lady Jane Gray. She loves me enough to wake me up at 4:30am every morning to make sure I am not late to work. It's not her fault she doesn't know that I only work three days. She hates posing for photos...


I am thankful for iCarly because I instantly respond to its joyfulness. Like the reaction I have to coffee or brownies.


I am thankful for a church where, even though I can't get involved, I want to get involved. It took long enough.


I am thankful for my mom and everything she has done for me... every book recommendation, every carefully picked curriculum. She taught me from a young age that Jane Eyre and Star Trek are important. She likes to monologue about politics. I'd be pretty boring and dumb without her. The above picture is an accurate representation of our relationship. Totally.


I am thankful for Pratt Saturday Morning Art Classes. Pratt looks like Hogwarts and it's such a lovely way to spend the autumn and I learned a ton there. It's clear now I'll never to to art school, but Pratt is just enough that I don't mind too much.


I am thankful for living a subway ride away from glorious Downtown Brooklyn and a slightly longer subway ride away from Manhattan. I don't know what my life would be without my monthly museum trips.


I am thankful for Hermione Granger and Dana Scully who remind me daily that hard work, determination, dedication, integrity, resourcefulness, decisiveness and a ton more scary character qualities are what it really takes to be a Strong Female (of) Character.


I am thankful for having a job I don't hate at a young age which is teaching me all about good work ethics. I am thankful that my coworkers and the majority of the costumers are really terribly nice people who I am glad to know.

X-Files guuuhh I have been rendered speechless OKAY? Doggett and Reyes = too happy to exist on this gloomy show. Mulder and Scully = too perfect to exist in this dark and loveless world. Agent Harrison = too much lip-liner to exist in 2002.
